In my small coils, 4"16", I drive them with 2 MOT`s in series, and use
56 nF/1600 VDC Phillips 376 caps.
2 caps =112 nF lasts less than a minute ---> overvolted mostly.
A 4 strings with 2 series caps =112 nF lasts about 15 minutes.
My 6 trings with 3 caps in series = 112 nF is still in great shape after
some hours operation. (and will probably last forever.
My 8 strings with 4 caps in series =112 nF is in myseum duty, where it
has done several hours of service without a snitch.
I strongly advise any coiler to do these performance tests, to get a
real feeling for the durability of these caps. You`l feel so much more
secure about your present cap, after you have deliberately blown a
cheaper configuration, and taken the caps apart and seen that they all
blow at the innermost 1/2 meter of the foils, due to heat buildup in
there.
