hi bill,

I am not to sure about the safety gap..but i do think that they do fire 
sometimes when properly set. about the variac "tingling" I think that it 
could be a serious
problem if you recieve a tingling sensation I am sure there may be enough 
voltage present to elecrocute you under the right circumstances.this tingling 
may have some thing to do with the NST's being connected to the house 
ground,I was under the impresion that the NST's case should be connected to 
your RF ground but again I am not sure.
