[TCML] Re: Polypropylene vs Metalized Polyester

Hello All.

Even if these capacitors aren't suitable for Tesla coils, hundreds of 33nF 15KVdc MKT can be used for other HV devices such as:
- Cockcroft Walton voltage multipliers.
- Marx generator
- storing HVdc energy
- pulsed HVdc devices (few pulses per seconds max)
- X-ray machines

Gary,
I was afraid of that. I was hoping they might be useful since I came into possession of a few hundred of these.

Unfortunately, polyester, a.k.a Mylar, is not a suitable dielectric for Tesla coil tank circuits, it is too lossy and will overheat and fail in short order. Polypropylene is what you want.

I have seen that polypropylene is the best choice for Tesla coils.
What would be the comparison with Metalized Polyester.

I have "inherited" a good quantity of Metalized Polyester caps from
Wesco at .033uF / 15KVDC. Would these be good tor Tesla Coil use?
