[TCML] Re: Current capacitor choices

Hi Jim

Almost all kinds of MKP / metalized film capacitors (with the right voltage/capatiance ratio) is viable for a MMC.

I collected a list of good capacitors here: https://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/good-mmc-capacitors/

You can also choose the same capacitors in the MMC calculator along with a Tesla coil design: https://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/calculators/mmc-calculator/

Kind regards

Mads

I was just pricing the venerable 942P series for some speculative MMC designs, and they're $7-10 each, depending on values. .15uF, 2kV in Qty 100 is $677.

So a string of 10 (to get 20kV) is about $70. and will be 0.015 uF, if you wanted to get to 0.06 that's 4 strings or $240.

Notionally a 6" diameter secondary 36" tall (winding of 29") and a topload resonating around 100kHz, with a flat primary that's 10 turns and 44 uH will take about 0.06 to resonate at 100 kHz

What are people using these days?
