I've seen Roger's coils in action. The one without a top load is a very old coil probably built at a time when top loads were thought to not be needed. He didn't build it. Indeed it does work however the top windings emit a lot of corona and small streamers as would be expected with no top load. The top windings will eventually be damaged without a top load to shield the top of the secondary windings. This is a question for Roger Smith in Ohio. He is currently running two large coils. One has a 4-ft toroid on the top. The other has "NO" toroid on the top, only a vertical 1/2" rod. Both work great.
