I think a JL with a capacitor connected to the transformer is very stressful for the pig, if the spark gap does not fire right away. A non linear resonance condition is very likely to start, if a capacitor is connected to a lightly loaded or unloaded pig. I tried to describe this condition in my post about ferroresonance recently on the list. This is well known among power distribution engineers, but has not been much discussed on this list.
Search ”transformer repair in hindi” on Youtube, and you will find an interesting clip, although the language is hindi, but the clip is easy to follow anyway. If these guys can do a complete transformer overhaul in a small workshop backyard, it should be doable anywhere.
