Gary, I know the motor fully synchronizes at 120 vac (no need to over volt). I can see the fixed visual artifacts under regular fluorescent light. And when I unplug it I can see those visual art affect start wandering around. I have no doubts about the motor. But their goal here is (1) be able to initially try to set the flying electrodes with the fixed electrodes (mocked up on the coil chassis) before I fire it up the first time, so that I don't release the magic smoke while fiddling with the phase controller. And (2) to ensure that my phase controller has a usable range of adjustment.
