True--It's best to have only metal on a VDG terminal. Any insulator will
acquire a surface charge which will promote spark formation. The higher the
insulator stands above the metal, the more it will cause sparks or coronas.
The aluminum metal tape that Ace Hdwe sells is the best for attaching the
electrode halves together. Be sure to slick down any edges or bumps.
Especially with a high impedance source like a VDG, it's best to minimize
insulators in high voltage designs.
