I think that if the mains circuit has a built-in GFI protection, any Tesla coil is going to give you trouble. HV and GFI just don't play nice together as HV wants to leak out of the mains wiring. Is there not a different circuit you can plug into that isn't GFI protected? I can't suggest why this NST is more problematic than others.
