Breakout voltage will depend a lot on how sharp the breakout point is. I often used a sharpened steel nail which quickly gets rounded and dull. When it's rounded and dull, a somewhat higher variac setting is needed for breakout. When the nail is rounded, the system buzzes as I turn up the variac, then breaks out suddenly and strongly as I continue to turn up the variac. Possibly around 50 volts but hard to remember because I didn't pay much attention to that. Yeah you don't want to go too long either. Put a 6" or longer just to see what happens if you want, should suffer also. Around 3" is probably best coming from John's experience. I am near that also. Again, what is the variac percentage you are currently at for first breakout starting? Wondering on this.
