They are AC but often come with simple push button speed controls and have an advantage of being virtually silent. The torque is a little low so you cant overstrech the belt.
Personally i use AC high speed fixed motors with built in cooling fans i got from AX-man some time ago. I dont know what they came from but they are very powerful and allow for almost continuos discharges.
On a related note I had one of my large 5 foot machines setup in the living room and a friends dog decided it was a perfect urinating post. I didnt even notice and proceeded to demo the machine, only to spread the urine all over the mechanics ruining everything including expensive bearings.
It was a sad day. ----- Reply message ----- From: "doug" <doug11642@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Tesla Coil Mailing List" <tesla@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [TCML] VDG pickups (was Ignition coil driver) Date: Sat, Dec 26, 2015 9:43 AM The best motors for small to medium size VDG's are, by far, those little sewing machine motors, They have gobs of low end torque, are a brushed motors, can be controlled with a single-pole light dimmer. and cheap. Most sewing machine repair shops have used ones for $5 to $10. Stefan. Initially I decided to go with the traditional build. Id had my fill of electronics and wanted something different (I then built a uP speed control for the motor) So, hair dryer v High voltage supply. I've thought about it, but I'd need to change my bottom roller to Aluminum. I don't have the workshop tools to make another crowned roller. The last two rollers were machined for me, so it will have to wait until someone with a lathe owes me a favour..
You can wrap tape around the roller to make a crown. All it needs to be is a bit bigger in the middle than on the sides. _______________________________________________ Tesla mailing list Tesla@xxxxxxxxxx http://www.pupman.com/mailman/listinfo/tesla _______________________________________________ Tesla mailing list Tesla@xxxxxxxxxx http://www.pupman.com/mailman/listinfo/tesla _______________________________________________ Tesla mailing list Tesla@xxxxxxxxxxhttp://www.pupman.com/mailman/listinfo/tesla
