No, Matt,

You want an ordinary 1N4007 silicon diode reversed biased across the 
output.  The forward voltage across MWO diodes is in the range of 35 to 
50 volts, which wouldn't give the power supply much protection.

However, such a diode won't protect against transients relative to 
ground.  Some combination of resistors and capacitors might give a bit 
of protection, but in the long run, lead acid batteries are your best bet.

Switch mode supplies are delicate creatures, unsuited to the sort of 
application you are proposing.  You need a good old vacuum tube supply.  
That would tolerate massive transients better than anything made of silicon.
