A curious note, this goes in line a bit with coal gas and other similar mixes used in telegraphy days, but regular Propane gas seems to be a great material for these quenched gaps. Of course a lot of care is needed to avoid the obvious (BOOM!) but to purge the air of a chamber with propane seems as good if not better than alcohol vapour/turpentine/acetone etc. Some of the hydrocarbons produce a lot of soot which will eventually cause shorts but so far propane alone seems as clean as alcohol and without the mess of a liquid...
