Quenching with compressed air works great. Compressed nitrogen works noticeably better. I have constructed 'manifolds' from acrylic tubing which direct the air blast right where the electrodes spark. Pressures beyond ~90 psi elicit no noticeable improvement.
How big was your orifice? Are you in a choked/sonic flow regime? As you move into choked flow, increasing the pressure doesn't increase the flow, because of shock wave forming in the throat.
When the absolute pressure ratio across the orifice is >1.89 (about 28psia if the downstream side is at 15 psia), then the possibility of choked flow exists.
