Some places also have transfer stations where folks drop off appliances. ________________________________ From: Dave Halliday <dh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: 'Tesla Coil Mailing List' <tesla@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, March 8, 2014 12:13 AM Subject: Re: [TCML] MOT Transformers, VTTC Advertise in Craigslist for dead microwave ovens. Your community might also have free classifieds in your local newspaper. Check with local hotels, restaurants, schools, etc... I did this about five years ago and still have about 20 MOTS that I use for projects. Lots of nice other stuff -- microswitches, interlock switches (higher current), fans, motors, etc... Sheets of stainless steel (the inside box) Used mine for power transformers for some CNC machines, a nice small spot welder and some electronics power supplies. Also, 12.6 * 33 = 415.8 watts -- most largish ovens are rated for 500-800 watts continuous duty so you should only need one MOT. #10 is rated for 30 amps. If you are doing intermittent firing, that should be OK. http://www.cerrowire.com/ampacity-charts I would go with stranded wire -- THHN is the stuff to use. Sold wire will be a bear to form around the core. THHN has a nice hard plastic coating so it doesn't nick or break -- great stuff. Use stranded! Also, each transformer has its own characteristics. When you get the core, wind ten turns of hookup wire, measure the voltage and calculate your secondary from that measurement. There will be some small pieces of core laminations that you can remove from the center of the core -- do not do this as these comprise part of the magnetic circuit of your transformer. These prevent your core from saturating, blowing fuses and having horrible efficiency. No need to re-invent the square wheel...
