In a magnifier, the secondary generally has much lower inductance and thicker wire than the extra coil (3rd coil). The primary and secondary are very closely coupled at k = 0.35 or higher. Usually a long metal rod or tube connects the top of the secondary to the bottom of the extra coil. The secondary has a toroid or corona ring at the top and the rod connects to this. Since you brought up magnifiers am I right in that the top of the secondary toroid has gto wire that will feed another secondary coil just like the first? Therefore the space has to be between the toroids if you want to do any toroid raising. Generally it works a lot better with the small toroid below the large one. If you put the small toroid on top, the sparks will likely still emit from the large toroid. It's possible that this arrangement might give the sparks an upward bias, I don't remember. The reason you often see the toroids touching is because coilers often just rest one toroid on top of the other. However the spaced toroid method works very well. If the top toroid is too heavy, the 1/4 20 threaded rod might get a little wobbly, but will likely be OK. Some folks put a pvc or metal cylinder of some sort between the two toroids. There are various approaches that can be used. I don't know how high the upper toroid can be raised before other problems might develop? (I never tried raising it more than a few inches). Actually Richard Hull of the TCBOR had a magnifier setup in which the upper toroid was maybe a foot higher than the lower one, and there was a cone- like metal piece connecting the two, and that system worked well.
