Re: [TCML] Looking for capacitors for Giant tesla coil

Hi Carlos,

The Aerovox spec sheet for their SX series of pulse caps can be found at the link below. Unfortunately, the specific capacitor you're looking at is not listed, but the overall specifications should apply to the series:
http://www.capturedlightning.com/photos/Temp/Energy_Discharge_Caps3.pdf

These caps use Polypropylene-Kraft-Foil construction with Dioctyl Phthalate (DOP) dielectric fluid. They're intended for light duty energy discharge applications, typically at 1 PPS or less. However, if suitably derated, they may be able to withstand Tesla coil duty for short to moderate run times. The paper portion of the dielectric system is lossier than newer polypropylene-foil or metalized film polypropylene pulse caps. These caps will heat up more in use, and the technology is not self-healing. Like most pulse caps, they're only rated for 20% voltage reversal, so you may not want to run them above 30 kV (60 kV peak-to-peak) in Tesla Coil use. You may also want to call the engineering folks at Aerovox to discuss your intended application before actually purchasing these, or purchasing one to "beat on" in a lower-power test system.

You may be also able to find some more modern self-healing PFC caps that use Polypropylene-foil or metalized polypropylene construction. These sometimes appear on the surplus market at reasonable prices. Although utility PFC caps come with internal bleeder resistors, this should not be a problem when used in a high power system.

Good luck and best wishes,

Bert

Hi All,
We are considering building a 150kva tesla coil, similar in scope to
Greg Leyys "Electrum".
Does anybody know a cheapish sorce for a tank capacitor bank that would
be up to the task?

I see on Surplus sales Nebraska they have a number of Aerovox pulse caps
rated 50kv 0.307uf.

SX359E5
Aerovox quick discharge pulse capacitor. No PCBs. Single ended. Body is
capacitor ground. Removed from service. Very clean.

     • 0.307 µF @ 50 kv
     • 684 Joules
     • Dimensions: 6" x 12" x 19", 27" overall height with insulator
     • Mounting Plate: 6" x 16"
     • Mounting Holes: 4" x 14" c-c
     • Weight: 78 lbs

They don't have any further technical info, and Aerovox don't reply...

Does anybody know as to the suitability of these caps...?
They appear to be low inductance, but will they handle the pulse rate...?

Thanks,

carlos
