Re: [TCML] maxwell Capacitor
Carl and Jim,
Can you model it just as a damped Sin function?
I was modeling it as a a modulated damped sin wave as to include the notches as well.
A*e^(bt)*sin(wt)*sin(dt)
Where A is the peak current as output from java tc around 800-1000 amps in my case =/
b is a parameter relating to decay time
w is resonant frequency
and
d a parameter effecting notch frequency
And then applied the rms current equation over the expected conduction interval and multiplied by the pulses per second.
But your saying i should multiply by the "square of the duty cycle". so (bps*conduction time/1sec)^2 would be the same as D^2 as it would still provide the ratio of on time to total time. I have never heard to do that before.
I take it you still wish to perform the rms integral over a single pulse length?
At some point in the next few days i will rework my excel sheet with that new information. Perhaps this will fix the capacitor headache I have been having for over a year. Granted after the summer of 2011 I have not been working on this much at all, only with the occasional head scratching over my numbers.
Thanks,

Hey---
Do you need 100 amps RMS? That would be a big coil indeed. My TC has a
peak primary circulating current of 110 amps peak, but the RMS is only about
6 amps. Wikipedia has formulas. You can calculate for the damped sine
wave, then multiply it by the square of the duty cycle.

Thank you,
I could not find a way on the site to get to the pdf datasheets, but your
link has shown me how to get to them all. =)
Cheers for that!
The 25A hard limit is killing me, as I need around 100A .04uf. Oh well,
these caps are not a good investment as such.

Hi Jay,
This capacitor is a double-ended polypropylene film-foil pulse cap that
can be safely used in a TC tank circuit.
Although MOST Maxwell 31xxx-series caps are rated at 1 pulse per second
(PPS), this particular 0.09 uF 40 kV pulse capacitor is an exception. As
long as you keep the RMS current below 25A, you should be able to run
this cap at virtually any break rate.
Please note that a single capacitor should be limited to a maximum AC
charging source of about 40/3 kV RMS (or about 13.3 kV RMS) to prevent
overvolting during ringing in the tank circuit. The cap is rated for 20%
voltage reversal, so the above voltage derating will keep it in a safe
operating region. Since this cap uses older film-foil technology, it is
not self-healing - be careful not to accidentally overvolt it.
The spec sheet for this cap can be found here:
