Re: [TCML] DC rating for 7KV5 transformer

If you can find caps of suitable ratings then go for it. The CDE series is widely used for MMC caps. Any caps in that series should do as long as the current is appreciable .

Right now the .047uf caps are reasonably cheap i believe

11 of them in a string? Can't we just get a higher rating?

Ah, I take it you bought these on ebay?

Anyway I recomend you get some MMC caps part number CDE 942C20P15K, you should need like 11 or something like that as you can probably get away with a single string.

I am trying to put together a group buy for these, or a different value CDE cap within the next few months if you want to wait. If not ebay has them.

Thanks for your quick reply. The caps were;

ASC SHV24
0.010MFD +/- 10%
10Kv WVDC

As I said, "were". They're now crispy, and make a cool light bulb when hooked up to power. For the few mins the coil was running, it sounded ANGRY. But I STILL can't get streamers from the top load.

You need to look at the RMS current rating for the capacitor, not just the voltage rating.
As well as the peak current rating, is the cap rated for pulse duty?

Also pay attention to the type of dielectric inside the capacitor, polypropylene is the best.

for a static gap i would guess a 0.01uf cap, and for a SRSG perhaps .02.
I usually shoot for tipple the RMS voltage as the cap voltage.

What caps were you using out of curiosity ?

Just wondering what rating I should use for caps if my NST is 7.5KV @ 30mA.
I tried 2 10Kv caps in series, and they burst into flames (and so did the
$20 I spent on them). Ideas?
