ANd wired detectors still have batteries (so that when your house 
catches fire in the electrical service panel, cutting of the juice, 
you'll still be woken up by the alarm)

In my house, the "chaining" function also works when the power is off.

The chaining is MOST annoying when it's hard to tell which of the darn 
detectors is giving you the false positive (at 3AM)
