Re: [TCML] Optimal secondary height, was power losses through GTO wire

Jeff,

I agree with Dave that your system should be fine as is.
A taller secondary gives the advantage of fewer strikes to
the primary or ground, and less danger of racing sparks
and breakdown along the secondary form at higher powers.

The only possible disadvantage of a tall secondary (that
is still in the optimal range) is that it may cause clearance
issues with the ceiling if you're running indoors in with
limited ceiling height.

With a taller secondary you'll tend to use more primary
turns which also tends to reduce spark gap losses which
thereby increases overall efficiency of the Tesla coil.

Cheers,
John

Jeff,

Conventional thinking on secondary coil dimensions suggests that the
optimum ratios of length to diameter should be between 3.5 and 5. Your
secondary is at 4.7, so your system should be fine just as it is.

upper 4" of the coil temporarily without physically removing or cutting in and
tapping the windings ? Say a temporary 8" dia by 2" winding on a form wired out
of phase at the top ?

wire to the primary . I am trying to figure my losses through the 15 ft of gto
wire. Would it be a dc loss or a loss at the operating freq 120khz. Another
words if it was calculated as a a dc loss then the resistance of the wire would
be much greater than the 8 turns on the primary and the loss would be large but
if it were calculated as an ac loss the impedance of the primary would be around
16 to 20 ohms and the wire, being less than an ohm the loss would be negligible
