RE: [TCML] conical/tapered cyl sec. coil info




Having wound a small conical coil intended for use as a secondary in a small TC recently, the first difference in the mechanics of getting the wire on a cone vs. a cylinder is the tendency of the wire to slip towards the end of the cone with the smaller radius, especially when you pull it snug which is of course good practice in winding secondaries.  If I were to do it again, I would try and start winding from the small end of the cone and work outwards towards the larger radius.  Probably with a plug-in hand drill on a variac with the little part of the funnel in the chuck. Maybe a dowel through the middle and a simple jig to keep it spinning somewhat centered on the workbench.
In my attempt, starting from the wide part of the base and working up to the narrow end, having double sided scotch tape on the smooth plastic funnel was the only way I could get the wire to stay in place.  It takes patience and acquired skill as you figure it out by doing it.  Also using some medium grit sandpaper on the surface of the coil form before winding may help the tape hold better, just remember to remove dust from sanding before you start to wind.

How much smaller will the radius be at the top of the coil vs. the 10-12 inches at the bottom?  The radius delta/height will be used to figure the coil's inductance.
I have not yet calculated what a topload or tank circuit for mine would be yet so I will leave the rest of advice to the experts.
