i was sent to this site by alan majernick.....i was hoping to possibly get a tesla coil built for a project that my partner and I are building. alan seems to be pretty busy w a "pesky" day job lol and thought that i may have a better chance finding someone to help me out on this site. we checked out coils on ebay and we were
wondering if there was any possible way to get a secondary made to our
specs?
3.5 in coilform
1200 turns, 26 awg
21 in winding length
This is something you can make yourself in a few hours while watching
TV. You can use PVC or cardboard tube as your form (think about how
you're going to mount it to the base, and how the toroid will be
mounted. That will determine what you use and how long it is (longer
than 21", for sure).
Get yourself a spool of wire (from Mouser or DigiKey or a local motor
rewind shop). You need about 1100 ft.. that will be about 1/2 pound of
wire.
Get a roll of scotch tape and cut a bunch of pieces about 1" long and
stick them somewhere convenient. Tape the wire to the form. Start
winding.. every 100 turns, stick a piece of tape on to hold it (so you
can get up and leave it without it going sprooing).
If you do a turn every 2 seconds (which is about how you would do by
hand), you'll be putting a piece of tape on every 5 minutes. In an hour
or so, you'll be done.
If you want faster...it's a two person job...
Get yourself a piece of allthread to use as an axle, and run it down the
center of pipe with a couple pieces of wood (balsa is easiest) or dense
foam, or even one of those plastic plugs you use in the end of a mailing
tube. Put the allthread into the chuck of a variable speed drill. One
of you spins the tube, the other feeds the wire.
This is a 5-10 minutes to finish.
Other tricks..
A strip of double stick tape the entire length of the form helps the
wire stay in place.
also wondering about toroids.....?
TOROID
2"x8"
There are people who sell nice toroids, but they are expensive (>$100).
Ross Engineering is one source. There are others which other posters
will no doubt tell you.
You might look into using florists foam and covering it with aluminum tape.
Flexible metal dryer vent hose is very popular in the 3-4-5" size, but
I've never seen it 2".
You could also look for something ring shaped and cover it.
We are building a plasma arc speaker and would like to purchase a secondary rather than make our own.
please feel free to get back to me via email or by phone at 2076891199 for any questions or concerns. if you have any info on anyone that could make a coil if you cannot i would be very grateful for any info.
thank you for your time!
