[TCML] large toroid/new tertiary
I recently acquired a rather large spun aluminum toroid of 33in x 9.5in.
After placing this on my tertiary coil (my magnifier system is outlined in an
earlier thread (http://www.pupman.com/listarchives/2011/Jun/msg00136.html) (9kV
120mA input) I watched as my coil was engulfed in racing arcs. After lowering
my toroid and seeing more racing arcs, I switched to a 26 awg 4.5in x 16.75in
tertiary. This too experienced the same problem until the toroid was lowered;
then the problem was that there were arcs between the toroid and the
transmission line. This prompted the change to a 23 awg 6.5in x 24in tertiary.
This worked very well, allowing the max arc length to be reached; however, a
rather large hot spot ended my run. Now I am considering building a tertiary of
well-insulated (not enameled) wire. I also relize that this may lead to the
reconstruction of the entire system. If this were to occur, I would continue to
use the pancake primary and secondary configuration as insulating the two is way
too easy. Any suggestions (bare in mind that I have a 6 9-60s and I may look
for a PT)?
