[TCML] My first VTTC using a 833A tube

Hi,

today I tested my first VTTC. It uses a 833A and seems to work well. I built 
it along this schematic:

What I don't understand is the function of the capacitor C2. Steve writes in 
his FAQ that this C is a RF bypass cap for protecting the diode of the 
voltage doubler, but this can not be the only function of it because when I 
remove this cap, my VTTC nearly gives NO output! So what is the function of 
this capacitor?
