A good rule of thumb is 1.5 x the minor toroid dia.   Example:  6 x 24
toroid     6/2 x 1.5  =  3 x 1.5  =  4.5"   this is base of toroid to last
turn of sec coil.

Also, if winding a new coil, stress is reduced by space winding the last 4-5
turns on the top of sec.
