RE: [TCML] Phase Controller
Andrew.
The only thing you can say for sure is that the bigger the HP rating of the
motor, the larger the capacitance required is "likely" to be.
Gary said he used a 40uF on a small teletype motor which, in the UK at
least, were under 0.5HP. I used 34uF on a 0.5 HP and 93uF on a 1.5HP.
However I am running on 50Hz - which will affect things most likly.
As John says on his site, look for the resonant rise that you are getting.
Too much means too big a cap, not enough is a bit too small, while no
resonant rise means definitely too small.

Hi Gary, All,
True, it is all trial and error at this point. If there were enough examples
of data on the Make, HP, Voltage, RPM, and Cap Size, and Variac size of all
the existing, SUCCESSFULLY phase-controlled SRSGs on the list, perhaps some
sort of useful "cluster patterns" might emerge. I would be willing to do the
compiling & analyzing if there is a convenient place on the list to host any
results that may come from it. I realize it may be some time before enough
data is collected to analyze. Please send any data off-list.

Trial and error is what we all use. Way easier than pioneering a
mathematical
odel and solution. Don't we all have a junk box full of motor caps? ;-)
Since the caps are used (energized) continuously, they need to be motor RUN
aps, as opposed to motor START caps, which are only suitable for momentary
peration.
I suggest asking others using the same size and type of motor as you are,
what
hey use. FWIW, with my small 3600RPM Teletype motor, I use a 40uF cap.

Ok so using John Freau's design, whats the best way to get in the ball
park on cap size? Can someone throw some supporting math out there
instead of guessing? I would assume the type of cap used is important as
well. Thanks all.
