Others will probably tell you different but IF the wire doesn't get hot it's OK. My guess would be that #18 WILL get hot though. I've typically used #10 with my coil which uses a 12 kV, 60 ma transformer and it gets warm but not hot, meaning there really isn't significant power loss. Purists would use heavy copper straps or braid.
