I designed the formula not to state a theoretical maximum arc length,
but rather to state the arc length that might be obtained from an efficient coil of any
type, either NST powered, or powered in some other way (by a pole pig for example).
Generally speaking, smaller coils have a harder time meeting the formula's
result, than larger coils. Larger coils tend to be more efficient due to lower
proportional losses. (There could be other factors too.)
I generally express the formula as:
spark length (inches) = 1.7*sqrt watts (wallplug)
