RE: [TCML] Question on spherical top load size.
You can get 11" and 16" stainless steel rimless bowls at Ikea for cheap.
These work great.
Either size will work well for your coil...the 11" would probably work
the best to get you long streamers.
Just be sure to find two that line up well...sometimes they are slightly
off in size.
Then you can take them to a welder to connect them or you can just tape
them together, which works just as well.
If you do get them welded, drill a hole in the bottom/center of one of
the bowls and have the welder tack on a 1/4" nut over the hole. Now
you've got a way to solidly connect it to your secondary.
Then put a 1/4" bolt through the cap of your secondary and have the
connections from the top connect to it. Insulate the head of the bolt
with HV putty or epoxy/ect so you don't get internal arching in your
secondary. You absolutely need to use a break out point with a spherical
topload, (unless its quite small) otherwise its quite likely that the
portion of your coil most likely to break out will be your secondary
itself, probably right at the portion of wire that connects the
secondary to your topload, and its almost impossible to insulate.
You can use all sorts of interesting stuff as your breakout
point...anything that changes the electrical field enough in the
breakout point area to focus the charge there.
It can be glass, quartz crystals, bolts, steel bars, smaller spheres,
what have you. Just as long as it protrudes about 2 inches from the
surface of the sphere you'll be in good shape.

Subject: [TCML] Question on spherical top load size.
Hello All
Im planning on trying a spherical top load for my coil. Im hoping to
accomplish a more singular arc than what Im currently getting out of my
toroid. Does anyone have any size suggestions? Im running a 4.5in.
Dia. secondary. Primary input is currently 12,000v 60ma
