Re: [TCML] Beginning Tesla Design

Taylor,

The spark gap is the heart of a Tesla coil in a sense, so it's a good
idea to build something with good quenching. I assume you'll begin
by using a static gap. Gary Lau's vacuum gap or pressure gap is
an excellent design. The TCBOR/Richard Quick gap works well too.

If you use a PFC cap on the NST be sure it's not the motor start
electrolytic type which can explode. A motor *run* cap is OK
(the type in a metal can... not electrolytic). It's not really necessary
to use a PFC cap. Using such a cap will just reduce the input current and
improve the power factor.

You'll probably want to include a safety gap and "Terry Filter" also, to
protect the NST. Gary Lau has some good comments at his website
regarding how to connect the various grounds to reduce electrical
kickback into the house wiring.

Cheers,
John

Subject: [TCML] Beginning Tesla Design

My name is Taylor Skidmore and recently I decided that I wanted to make

a Tesla coil. After spending hours reading over the internet, I decided

that I was ready to craft my own, but I was wondering if you could

simply look over my design and put in any comments you might have. I did

make this with TeslaMap, as my experience in electronics did not allow

me to attempt to make my own calculations, even though I did try. If

there is something wrong, could you please help me find the mistakes?

Thanks,

Taylor Skidmore
