[TCML] method of routing secondary wire to toroid

Hi all,

 

I searched the archives, but can't find the specific answer I'm looking for.
What is the best way to route the secondary wire from the last turn to the
toroid? I've read where some space wind in free air up to the base of the
toroid,

where others just run it over the top end cap to a piece of threaded rod or
similar. It seems the space wound method would be very fragile. Would it be
OK to wind it around a smaller than secondary diameter toroid support?

For instance, if the secondary diameter is 6" and the toroid support is 3"?
Finally, does the toroid support and connecting wire receive an insulating
coating of varnish or poly? 

 

Another consideration is allowing the toroid height to be adjustable, while
still having a robust connection. 

 

What are the pros and cons of the various methods, and what is considered
best or common practice?
