Hi Tyler,

I see that others have already addressed your question and
my sentiments are pretty much the same as the collective
opinion expressed thus far. However, it seems that it would
be far simpler to just spring for a 500' spool of #8 THNN
building wire at your local Home Depot, Lowe's, ect. and
construct your ballast inductor from that, unless you already
have the 6 strand  cable on hand. Copper prices are actually
pretty well down from their record levels a couple of years
ago and I just recently noticed a 500' spool of #8 in my local
Home Depot that was like just over $100, IIRC. That's
what I used to construct my ballast from the core of an old
x-ray transformer, which can be seen with its reddish insulation
in the bottom part of my control panel in this image:

I apologize for my rustiness with classical physics, but here's the problem:

I'm building an inductive ballast for a pole pig; the plan is for 200-300 turns of 8 gauge around a PVC pipe, with some welding rods taped together into a long bar sliding in and out of the PVC form.

My question arises because I found a supplier of some cable that has 6 strands of 8 gauge insulated copper wire inside. Would I be able to somehow splice the input to connect to all 6, then use say 50' of the cable to get 300 turns effective?

Is this feasible or not?
