Re: [TCML] Still stuck at 36"

Hello.

experience, like I said earlier, max vac didn't get me max spark length. It
was better at around 80% vac."

Yes I have also found a difference. In my case my gap likes the highest vac
setting. If I reduce the suction sparks fall off straight away, so it is not
down to reduced cooling, but obviously spark behaviour in less vacuum.

Or you can go a bit too extreme! Like this
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/follies/tesla/sucker_gap.html
The electrodes are 7 inches long * 0.75 inch. The three radial fins locate
the electrode centrally and also act as fins to give up their heat to the
airflow. The vacuum is applied to both tubes so they suck against one
another. I can't reverse my vac cleaner otherwise it would be interesting to
compare as has been suggested earlier in this thread.
(The reason for all this over engineering is that they are run in a sealed
box with a single hole acting as an air inlet. This cuts down the noise
significantly.)

Now here comes the odd part.

Prior to this design I had a central hole in each electrode, but the ends
were dead flat. Following some advice from the group I rounded the ends
while still retaining the holes. This caused an odd effect in that one
electrode was touch warm after 5mins run, whilst the other side was too hot
to touch. I spent a lot of time trying different combinations of putting the
hoses on reversed (left hose to right side etc], changing the copper
electrodes around in the tube holders, even reversing the connections that
fed the SG (yes I know its AC, but I was desperate) all to no avail. I even
put smoke into the gap! I can only assume the radius on the end was
different slightly and somehow affected the air flow, or maybe opposing
suctions means one overrides the other - I have no idea.

Phil
