RE: [TCML] Burn Through The Stem Of The Globe?
Guys:
I've burnt thru a 4" decorator light bulb, but never had a problem with the
12" or 14" globes which as Scott indicated are heavy wall construction. I
use IRF630 and IRF740 MOSFETS without difficulty. Over the past year I have
been testing an IRFP450 which can handle substantially higher current.
Tests on my power supplies using standard old (pre 1968)TV flybacks
indicates that I can achieve 20 to 25 kV, but only about 500 uA, nothing
close to the 2 mA that Antonio reported. I can get to 1.5 mA, but only at 5
to 7 kV. I've wound my own flyback on a huge 4" by 1" cross-section pair of
ferrite C cores and with that I can push to near 2 mA at 20 kV, but I do not
intend to use that on a plasma globe.
Steve Ward burned thru a 12" globe, but he did it by powering the globe with
a Tesla Coil. Even at that the pin hole was so small that it took a week
for the vacuum to be lost.
