I prefer to classify these systems as:
- A regular Tesla coil, or any other system where the energy is first
put in a capacitor or an inductor (induction coil) and
then passed to the output after the operation of a switch, or spark gap,
is operating with the "zero input response" of the
system. All the waveforms are consequence of initial conditions when the
switch operates.
- A "Solid-state Tesla coil", or any other system where there is an AC
power supply always connected to the system
during the energy transfer to the output, is operating with the "zero
state response" of the system. All the waveforms
are consequence of the input, and no initial energy is stored on the
elements.
- A third category is of oscillators, as the VTTCs, where an active,
dissipative, and nonlinear element is part of the circuit.
