RE: [TCML] New Thumper Prototype Testing

Dave's been following my Vlog, lol. I wondered who that 4th viewer was. ;)

As far as details of how it works, etc we currently have the entire lab
shutdown for construction of the new Robotics Lab, Machine Shop, Recording
Studios, Tool Room, and Soundstage. I spent today pressurewashing floors in
preparation for epoxy coating. In a few weeks the soundstage will be
operational and we'll produce a series of videos on Project Thumper, how
it's built, how it works, etc ad astra. In the meantime there is a fair bit
of information available on it through the Group website at
http://www.thegeekgroup.org/pages/projects-thumper.php

Thumper (like everything else in the lab these days) is being upgraded and
overhauled. It's making the transition to the Mark-8 Prototype stage with a
new control system, charging system, and after today a new gap (given that
we blew the current one apart today in testing).

For a "brief piece of text", here goes.
Thumper is setup in strings of 4 caps (450VDC/2000uF Electrolytic
Inverter-Grade CDE Caps), with all strings in Parallel. Nominal charge is
1400-1600VDC with a max of 1800. The Mark-8 Version is charged via a
current-limited MOT and charges at 16A mains current in a minute or so (I
haven't timed it since we put the new power supply in).

For the record, official Group videos are hosted at
http://www.youtube.com/user/thegeekgroup

The 3 videos mentioned below are hosted on my personal youtube channel which
is used for my own VLOG and is NOT in any way Geek Group Sanctioned (mainly
due to language/content, it's most definitely NSFW). Though you will see
production clips, etc there from Group videos they aren't posted to the
Group site until they're done in video-post. This is why you can find a
previous version of the Thumper demo there but it's different from the one
on the Group channel (we hadn't added the sponsor logos, tail, audio tweaks,
etc yet). I don't mind people following my VLOG (that's what it's for, lol).
But I do ask that people don't post "Group" videos from there around the
internet to represent the Group. Use the finished ones from the Group's
channel. They usually come on a few days after being posted in my Vlog. They
go live within an hour of being released from video-post and have proper
CGI, sound, etc. My Vlog is often used as a simple scratchpad for ideas
(that's why you see so many "test" videos there).

As always, comments, questions, hatemail, and donations are appreciated.
Though if you want a real response it is better to ask technical questions
in the Group forums.

Btw, for the curious, that Thumper promo took a day to shoot, uses about
1min 15sec of footage, and took 2 days in postproduction before it went
live.

We've come a long way from shooting with 10 year old camcorders and
triggering Thumper with a piece of string ;)

That seems like another lifetime...

Give me a couple months and we'll have a lot more to see. If you'd like to
be a part of all of this membership, as always, is free.

Have fun guys!

Hi Gary, all,

I believe Chris has documented some "Thumper" construction details
in other recent youtube videos:

It would be nice if there were a brief piece of text with a circuit
schematic, explaining what it is that we're looking at. What the cap array
is, how it's switched and connected to the load, etc...
