Re: [TCML] Quadruple stack of 1156 or 1256 Superior Variac
Hi Jim
Alex Tajnsek has a 125kVA nameplate (NO BS) unit we got
at Richmond salvage yard. 480V in, 0-560V out at a
cool 225A. Balancing chokes, drive motor, whole
lot A-OK, in-fact appeared to be brand new off skid.
2 "columns" of 8 1256D's wound for 480V powered by
drive motor and parallel chain drive to both stack
columns.
Local power company apparently bought for PT&D
transformer testing, and decided it was a "boat anchor"
(literally and figuratively). "Only" weighs ~1200 lb
on mounting steel skid. Will definitely need a "step-start"
with this monster, possible inrush at 480 was nearly
2kA! We have some huge ceramic heating "blankets"
for use as resistive ballast for large high power work.
He is currently running a 4 stack about size of yours
for magnifier research, routinely load to 20kVA + with
no issues...
