it is a good idea but you might need to use something a bit more radioactive than americium. in 
the amounts that you could legally obtain there might not energy in the emitted radiation to ionize 
6 feet of air. what about putting an x-ray tube on top of the tesla coil and have it running it of the 
output (car battery to run the filament?). at those voltages the x-rays would be so hard they'd 
probably ionize everything... just a thought
