Go 6awg or you will wish you did later when you want more power...100' is a
ways too. Is this direct burial, conduit, or overhead? In a conduit I think
you have to de-rate for heat build up.
Our resident Electricians should know and there is a lot of stuff on the
Internet regarding voltage drop and code.

For an outdoor 240vac/40A hookup, is 8AWG big enough, or should I go with
6AWG?  The cable run will be roughly 100'.
