Thanks for your responses. The digital meter is not 'Kill a Watt' brand but probably very similar. I can use it on everyday appliances without a problem. Interestingly I have discovered that my computer uses 7 watts when switched off . Computer screen switched off (not just standby) also uses 7 watts. Etc. Hmm. It all adds up.

I will install a PFC cap eventually, and keep my eyes out for analogue (power/volt/amp) meters over here.
