Re: [TCML] TRUE TC LEAK DETECTOR?

Just because the case is painted different does not mean the guts have changed. The earlier cases were black and now they are red.

The base is nothing more than a dry type high voltage transformer. From measurements, it puts out approx 2.2 KV AC. The 4 prong socket has 2 pins for the HV and the other 2 are a safety interlock. One side of the AC goes on one pin and the other pin goes to the transformer. The corresponding 2 pins in the plug are shorted. If the handpiece is not plugged in, there is no AC input to the transformer.

The hand piece is a molded Bakelite body about 2 1/2" in dia and a little over 8" long.
Inside the handpiece is a complete spark gap Tesla coil!
The bottom has a 2 gap adjustable spark gap that is controlled by a lever on the bottom of the handpiece. The gap opening is almost not visible and you cannot see difference in the points spacing when adjusting. The gaps look to be about 5/16" in dia and are mounted on copper plates for a heat sink.

The Tesla coil is a conical one wound on a porcelain form. About 1 1/2" at the base and 3/4" at the top. The actual cone is about 1 3/4" long.
The secondary is super fine cotton covered wire.
There are 2 slots in the base of the form and this is where 2 caps are fitted. They are about 1 1/2" long, 1/4" thick and 1/2' high. They appear to be a sandwiched mica type.
The caps measure 0.003 mfd each.

The HV comes up to the handpiece thru 2 HV wires and connects directly to the spark gap. Each side of the spark gap goes thru a cap to the primary of the TC. So, the gap is in parallel with the HV transformer and the primary of the TC is coupled by a cap on each side in series for each end of the gap.
The low side of the TC is connected to the top winding of the primary.

The coil throws a 1/2" to about a 1" spark, super purple in color, HOT and the coils just about gags you with the ozone it throws.

No, the design is totally different. The case is painted black on the one my friend has. Otherwise identical except for the plug on the line cord and the pictures he sent me of the innards match their description exactly. Wonder if there any other outfits ever made something like this?

Small world,

Hi Ed,

Ya' mean, like one of these?:

ECCO is still in business, and it doesn't look like they've changed the basic design of their little TC all that much since 1937... :^)
