Re: [TCML] On grounding, secondary base, and baffle gluing.
Hi Gary, Dave,
I did experience internal flashover one time over 20
years ago with one of those Info Unlimited BTC-3
Tesla coil kits. This seems rather strange too since the
secondary was either 3" or 4" in diameter by about 12"
long and would only produce about 6" to 8" sparks.
However I have built coils since then without the inter-
nal baffles without any internal flashover problems that
were considerably better performers as far as second-
ary length vs. spark output length goes, that were also
physically larger coils. I only started installing internal
baffle disc after reading, from this list, that they would
help prevent the internal flashover problem.

I've never used internal baffles either. I don't know, maybe I'm lucky? I
believe that most folks also do not use them.
Creepage disks on the outside of the secondary are an attempt to permit
higher values of coupling to be used before racing sparks occur. They may
achieve that, but I'm not sure that this has been shown to guarantee better
performance. And, they make one's secondary a whole lot more fragile,
albeit cooler looking.

are baffles really needed ??? Ive never used them, my mention of
'creepage disks'
sometimes gets neg. comments, but, isnt a baffle(s ) just an internal
version of
creepage disks ???
