Hardware store service counter, I asked for it, the guy went to his big book, asked me what guage, and he special ordered it in for me.

It straightens out pretty easily. I strung up lengths around the lab like clothes line, then used a shop towel and a plastic turkey baster to apply a coating of polyurethane. Once dried, I cut it up into identical lengths, and then used hose clamps to bind it up into a cylinder... And epoxy to encapsulate it.

What you probably want is some #14 soft iron wire that is coated with a thin layer of insulation such as polyurethane, cut it into 12 inch sections, and bound up into to a cylinder core. Works for me, though it will still heat some (it's pretty small)... I built a larger core of this type.
