Hey Reuben...yes is the answer its called a linear pass bank. Normally used in high current DC voltage applications for things like large gas lasers. ( 1 -10 Watts).
Sam's Laser site ( search for "Sam's Laser Site") has quite a bit of info and schematics of commercially produced units available, its a huge site you will need to look carefully for the info you need..
In most cases, when the polarity is reversed on a transistor ( with enuf current available) it goes poof...
