Re: [TCML] Bart's new coil, was Re: Safety gap, secondary coil, and coil mounting

Looking good, Bart! I like your method of primary support.
Is that a strike rail or a crash bumper? ;)
He he :-D . My son found that ring behind a store about 1 year ago and
brought it home. It's the top ring of a clothes rack they use at stores.
It just happened to be the perfect size and kind of looked cool! I'll
finish the ends off with chrome end caps. The primary is old and I've
used it on many coils, but it does the job and was designed for this
particular secondary.
IMHO you've got some uncomfortably close wiring on your rectifier and
SISG (maybe it's just the way the photos are taken?):
Your right. Although I used 15kV wire, it is closer than I would like.
I'll need to redo the wiring as it's only #14 (for the discharge path only).
And why the shunt across one rectifier leg here?
Good eye Phil! I built a full bridge, but will only use a half bridge as
one end of my pigs hv terminals is tied to RF ground. The bottom sting
will not be used unless I float the pig (but I decided there was no
need). The bridge is 30kV.
This is an interesting pic - both old school and new school together!
Why the extra holes in the rotor? Have you experimented with offset electrodes?
Where are the static electrodes?:
My disc holes were designed to allow various electrode configurations
(2, 4, 6, 8, 12). I didn't design for offsetting, but I guess it could
be used as such. Here's the layout.

If I was smart, I would have just drilled the remaining holes in the
spaces, but I had up to 12 electrodes in my head at the time. I also
wanted to try the dreaded 6 electrode configuration (never did).
Remember the ROTJIT program?
When I built the cabinet, I built it large enough to allow the rotary to
be housed as well as the SISG. I pulled it back out for now. For the
cabinet, I picked up precut 24" x 24" plywood. I only had to cut 1" off
of 2 of the sheets for the cube fit. I have almost zero wood cutting
tools (jig saw, miter box, and hand saw).
I put the rotary in there for a mock up and decided to take a picture. I
pretty much just stacked up the parts as a mock up. Note that the fan is
not yet installed. There is a muffin fan I'll be using. It's 10"
diameter (lots of air), but it runs on 240 Vac and I need to add an
outlet on my control panel and the box (no big deal, but just another
thing to be done).
Last night I pulled the coil down and added a Plexiglas top cap. I'm
working on standoffs for the toroid now. I stare at it for an hour or
so, look around the garage for odds and ends, and eventually end up at
the hardware store.
Take care,
Bart
