Hey Bart,
That term "Quenched Gap" changed about as much as "Tesla Coil" over the years. In the later years though they normally had a way of excluding air [oxygen] or introducing coal gas, hydrogen, etc...
In the early days the term was used loosely to describe any gap that could mechanically dissipate the heat as quick as it was generated. Kinraide had another decade before that term was introduced.
