If you could find you a nice large isolation transformer like

in my Green Monster control panel, there wouldn't be any
need to tear apart the core. The isolation tranny pictured is
a Toshiba 10 kVA rated (extremely overbuilt for this rating)
240 volt - 120/208/240 volt transformer. I say that it's ex-
tremely overbuilt in that it weighs over 230 lbs. and I regularly
process 20 kVA through it for shirt runs without a hitch. I'm
not sure exactly what it come out of but am reasonably sure
that it was is some type of medical environment. The source
that I obtained it from was the same one time source of x-ray
transformers. Unfortunately, that source seems to have now
dried up ;^(
The way that I run this particular transformer as a ballast
is to run the 240 volt input tap in series with the input to
the load (pole pig for the big coil or the x-ray transformer
driven JL) and short the 120 volt output tap. There are
like 6 paralleled leads that tie into that one 120 volt output
tap and I had to clip about half of them to "throttle back"
the amperage to stay mostly under 150 amps! This still
makes for one wicked ballast that's just barely more re-
sistance than a dead short at 240 volts input and allows
for about a 130 to 150 amp draw from a non-shunted
x-ray tranny or pole pig whose HV output is being power
arced ;^) woohoo! Its output amperage is generally limited
to "only" around 90 amps when driving the Green Monster ;^)
Once I landed this iso transformer, I ceased all further
search for the "perfect" ballast as this seems to be just that
for me.
