[TCML] Mid-South MIni Teslathon
Hi all,
Yesterday, Phillip Slawinski and Cameron Prince made the
3 1/2 hour drive from the Huntsville, AL area to my place
near Memphis, TN for a fun-filled afternoon and evening
of comradery and coil firing. Phillip brought his entire new-
ly built coil system (and Cameron) in his Volkswagon. Of
course he had to transport it disassembled and reassemble
it upon arrival. Besides the typical sweltering July heat and
humidity, the weather completely cooperated for all of our
outdoor coiling activities :^) Phillip has really learned fast
about coiling since he has only been at it since May. His
6" secondaried coil with his double toroid really rocked
to only be pushed by depotted 15/30 NST. Of course,
the 15/30 did get really hot pretty fast as he had removed
most of the shunts. His persistant questions to this list has
paid off. When evening arrived we just had to roll out the
Green Monster and let her rip ;^) We actually tried setting
the whole tank circuit assembly upon jack stands to raise
it another 18" or so off the ground since the Green Monster
only stands just under 8 ft. tall. I desingned it this "short" due
to the limited overhead storage clearance. This made the
sparks hit the ground a little less often and let us get 12 ft.+
arcs more often. We got one "freak" strike to a 6 ft. aluminum
stepladder "strike target" at right at 15 ft. and got two or
three hits out to 13'10". Since my secondary coil is a 12.5" x
49" unit and the toroid is a 12x56, I believe I have just about
maxed out the spark LENGTH that I can get from this beast.
It seems that once I reach about 50 to 60 amps input, the sparks
don't really get significantly longer when I push it on up to 90 amps,
just brighter and louder. We played with Phillips coil and tried
various taps and even tried Cameron's little SRSG that he
brought along with the coil. It seemed that the SRSG was
out of phase when we tried it though and Phillip's coil got
the best output with his own sucker gap. We also fired off
my PT powered 6" coil and had it really rocking and rolling
with 6 to 8 ft. arcs. All in all, we had a great time until we finally
(re)disaasembled Phillip's coil and loaded it back into his VW
for their return trip to northern AL, around 10:30 PM.
