I think the "browning" David's referring to is simply
due to UV. Most PVC will to this if left in the sun
for an extended period. It is not designed to be
exposed to UV, and will actually turn brown and get
very brittle.
Here's a pic of my sunburned pvc:

If you notice, the brown pvc is much farther away than
the pvc which actually got hot enough to melt. There
was no sign of browning anywhere except for that which
was exposed to the bright arc. Notice the pvc on the
electrode that got hot enough to melt the pvc and the
solder. It has no sign of browning, though it clearly
got hotter than the sunburned pipe.
